RSY-Netzer Takes Over! RSY-Netzer: The Zionist Youth Movement for Reform Judaism

RSY-Netzer have taken over the Movement Update! Daniel Lichman, Mazkir (Director) explains why.

The articles collected together in this RSY-Netzer edition of the Movement Update bring together five vital voices from our movement. Through these articles the key components that make up RSY-Netzer are evident: fun events, committed hadracha (leadership) and ensuring the next step in the chain of tradition.

RSY-Netzer continues to offer fun activities and inspiration to young people

RSY-Netzer and Me: Rabbi Ian D. Morris of Sinai Synagogue in Leeds looks back at his year in Israel and considers what the experience means for today's young people.

I write these words sitting in Jerusalem, attending the biennial conference of the World Union for Progressive Judaism. Last night, at the opening ceremony I watched a procession of national flags, carried by young, confident Progressive Jews from around the world who are participating in Netzer Olami affiliated youth movement Israel programs.  And the UK flag was carried by a young member of my congregation who is engaged in one of those year programs.

A Madrich’s Perspective: Micah Smith reflects on his experiences as a committed madrich (leader), showing the value of the experiences gained by the volunteers within the movement.

Whenever I tell my university friends how I spend my holidays, volunteering on Jewish camps, working long hours and without pay, I often get this strange look. It’s a kind of contortion of the face, expressing pity and admiration, bemusement and surprise. And then the question invariably comes: ‘why?’

Youth in Synagogue Life: Menorah Synagogue's Naomi Minsky discusses her work and shows how the youth at the synagogue’s RSY-Netzer club is at the heart of their community.

Youth at Menorah are clear evidence of the success of RSY Netzer’s aim to empower its chanichim to take an active role in the life and direction of their individual communities and the Movement for Reform Judaism at large. The young people with whom I work feel ownership of their synagogue; they are well aware of the fact that they are the future of the community and that they have the responsibility, means and ability to shape the future direction of the kehillah. They are at the same time well aware that they are part of a larger Reform community.

It seems almost impossible to believe that it's over 20 years since I first became involved in RSY-Netzer, and not much less since I left to find my way in the 'adult' world. Perhaps that's just one of the inevitable truths about growing up and growing older, but I think there's more to it than that. I suspect that it still seems so recent because there is still very little about my life today as an involved Jewish adult, full-time organisation consultant and coach, part time Jewish educator, father, husband and friend that hasn't in some profound way been shaped by my RSY-Netzer experience between the ages of 15 and 23.

The Purimspiel Weekend: 13 year old Michael Lewis from Sinai Synagogue on the event recently hosted by his community.

Sinai was rehearsing its play when the first guests from Alyth arrived but no time to say hello because both Alyth and Sinai (AKA Silyth) were desperate to practice. So straight back into the library to rehearse. Three shuls later every one was here and we were all having fun and practicing our great plays, or introductions to films. Then it was time for dinner, a lovely meal cooked by Sandra Freeman (the weekend’s caterer). It was a meal in traditional RSY form: chants, eat, chants, grace after meals.
